英语中习惯用语二

 上一次小编给大家讲了五个英语中的特定成语和俗语，今天接着分享一些有趣的俗语。

 1.come out in the wash  

   A：指某件事情会得到圆满解决。

  例：

   My buddies and I are organizing a biking trip across the country. We  

haven't mapped out the entire route or arranged for our food or lodging.   But I think there's plenty of time to work out the details. It'll all come out in the wash by the time we leave.
我那帮哥们儿正在筹划一次骑车横跨美国的旅行。虽然我们还没有确定整个行程的路线，也没有安排好食宿，但是我相信还有足够的时间敲定这些细节。到出发的时候，一切都会水到渠成。

  B：come out in the wash 还有水落石出，真相大白的意思。

 例：

   The governor claims that he resigned because of a health crisis. So

far he's refused to answer reporters' questions. Perhaps he's afraid 

of what might come out in the wash. Maybe they'll find out that he's 

trying to cover up what could become a political scandal!
记者报导说：这个州长自称是因为身体不好才辞职的。但是他一直拒绝回答记者的问题，也许他是担心暴露真相。记者们或许最后会发现，他其实是掩盖一件可能成为政治丑闻的事情。

2.Cash cow 指摇钱树或者是一个企业里特别盈利的部门。

  例：

When David Beckham joined the L.A. Galaxy, he created a lot of attention. Americans who had never watched soccer suddenly started buying tickets. But will he be worth the millions that the team paid for him in years to come? Is he their cash cow?"
当大卫.贝克汉姆加盟洛杉矶银河队，引起了大家的普遍关心。很多从来不看足球的美国人也突然间开始购买球票了。银河队为了把他弄到手，花了数百万美元。在今后几年里，贝克汉姆能成为他们的摇钱树吗？

3. Carry the day.指一个人一件事、或是一种意见占据上风的意思。

  例：

 When architect Maya Lin first proposed her design for the Vietnam War memorial, critics thought it wasn't traditional enough. They didn't think a granite wall that sloped into the ground was a proper tribute for those who lost their lives. Eventually her plan  carried the day, going on become one of the most visited sites in Washington, D.C.
这位历史学家说：建筑师林璎最初提出越战纪念碑的设计方案时，批评人士认为不够传统。他们认为高度逐渐降低、最后插入地面的大理石墙的设计，不足以用来悼念越战的阵亡者。但是最终，林璎的设计方案还是被采纳了，至今依旧是华盛顿特区游客最多的景点之一。

4.bread and butter 是生计，主要收入来源的意思。

例：

  When I saw my neighbor Katie's artwork at a gallery, I was amazed by her talent. I assumed that painting was her bread and butter. But she told me that it's only a hobby;she couldn't live on the money she makes from the paintings she sells.
我在展厅里看到我的邻居凯蒂的画儿后，简直被她的艺术才华折服了。我以为绘画就是她的收入来源，但她告诉我，画画只不过是她的一个爱好，因为卖画赚的钱不够她维持生计。
5.by the book 循规蹈矩，照章办事

I remember how clever my father used to be at getting around rules and regulations.  He always found ways to disobey our City Council.  But, he is a changed man since he immigrated to the United States.  Now, he does everything by the book!
我还记得我父亲当年是如何巧妙地躲避规章制度的。他总能想出办法来违抗市议会的规定。可是移民美国后，他却好像彻底变了一个人。如今，他凡事都会一丝不苟地按规定办。
